Birmingham Karate Club
Birmingham Karate Club is an independent Karate club located in Quinton. We practice Shotokan Karate.

Beginning in March 2015 under the name Quinton Shotokan Karate Club, we affiliated to Birmingham & Halesowen Shotokan Karate Club with Chief Instructor Sensei Cyril Cummins, 8th Dan.

In order to continue the legacy of Sensei Cummins, the club was renamed Birmingham Karate Club after his passing in 2017. The more recent club emblem bears the Kanji of his mantra 'never give up'.

Meet the Team

Sensei

Matt Russell, 3rd Dan

Matt started Karate in 2001 with Sensei Cyril Cummins, 8th Dan. His training has been influenced by the JKA, KUGB and more recently, Kase-Ha Ryu. He passed Sandan in 2012 under Sensei Cummins. Since Sensei Cummins's passing in 2017, he has trained under Sensei Slater Williams, 7th Dan.

Sensei

Sean Jones, 2nd Dan

Sean started Karate in 2000 with Sensei Nick Adamou. Relocating to the Midlands, he brings a plethora of experience in both Shotokan and Goju-Ryu, having trained under Sensei John Ross, 5th Dan; Val Patterson, 5th Dan and Glyn Jones. Sean passed Nidan in 2019 under Sensei Slater Williams, 7th Dan.

Sensei

Jason Coombes, 1st Dan

Jason started Karate with Sensei Lloyd Stevenson in 1987. During his time in the army, he represented the JIB and 1st Worcester & Foresters regiment whilst boxing at an amateur level. Jason returned to Shotokan in 2015 under Sensei Slater Williams, obtaining his Shodan in 2019.

Welfare Officer

Andrew Smith

Andy started training at Quinton dojo in 2018, taking on the role of Welfare Officer in 2019. Andy has enjoyed competing and attending numerous courses since he started his Karate journey.
